Myanmar have chosen their contestant for the Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Thailand later this year.

Myat Yadanar Soe, from Pyin Oo Lwin, will represent her country after being crowned the 1st choice by last year’s winner Thet San Andersen.

Some were surprised that the winner of the title hails from a smaller city with no history of winning pageants.

Myar came first out of 35 candidates, doing particularly well in the native costume section of the competition.

The country has not been active in some of the Miss Universe pageants due to the country’s ongoing civil war. The first Miss Myanmar (Burma) was in 1959.
